BRE04-20001218-BREST/FRANCE. A picture taken on 13 December 1999 shows the stern section of the Maltese tanker Erika before it sank off Penmarc’h, on the west coast of France. According to the final report of a French technical commission released on Monday 18 December 2000 and presented to French Transport Minister Jean-Claude Gayssot, the accident was caused by an inadequacy of maintenance and corrosion.
